In a remarkable technological advancement, a company called FBR has developed a robot capable of laying down bricks for an entire house in record time. Back in 2015, FBR set out with the ambitious goal of completing a house’s brickwork within just two days. Fast forward to today, and their robot can now accomplish this feat in a mere one hour!

How does it work? The secret lies in the use of monster-sized bricks, each measuring a whopping 23.6 x 15.7 x 11.8 inches (600 x 400 x 300 mm). These bricks are significantly larger than traditional bricks and weigh nearly 100 pounds (45 kg) each. Despite their size and weight, the robot handles them with ease, swiftly placing them to form walls over an impressive area of 750 square feet (70 square meters).

But here’s the catch: while the robot does the heavy lifting of placing the bricks, it still requires human assistance. Workers are needed to feed the massive bricks into the back of the truck where the robot is stationed. This collaboration between humans and machines showcases the potential for innovation in the construction industry, promising faster and more efficient building methods.

With FBR’s robot paving the way for rapid bricklaying, the future of construction looks brighter than ever. Imagine entire neighborhoods springing up in a fraction of the time it would traditionally take. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more groundbreaking advancements in the field of construction, ushering in a new era of efficiency and productivity.

The robot has been equipped with a telescopic arm that can stretch to three stories easily, making it ideal for most building constructions. Moreover, replacing the mortar with glue and people with the machine means that construction can proceed irrespective of the day or weather.

Agriculture hasn’t fundamentally changed since World War II, when the era of huge scale and vast plenty began. But today’s awareness of greenhouse gases, water conservation and food safety and stability call for a rethink. Silicon Valley startup IronOx suggests moving crops indoors, tending them with robots and doing so under the watchful eyes of smart cameras to grow more and better with less worry that the food sustaining us is also slowly killing us.

IronOx says the result of all this is “renewable food”: Not only do crops deliver consistent quality and yield but residual irrigation water is reused as are any unconsumed nutrients in it. More importantly the company claims that just the right amount of fertilizer is applied in the first place, tightly controlling a farm input that is a major source of methane, perhaps the most potent greenhouse gas. “Fertilizer requires a lot of energy to produce and emits a lot of greenhouse gasses,”

It’s a massive blow for a well-funded firm at the cross section of several growth areas. Iron Ox’s play has focused on fully automated greenhouses, courtesy of robotic arms, Kiva-like plant moving carts and other technologies. Utilizing indoor growing techniques and a trove of data, the pitch promised broader growing seasons in more diverse climates and the utilization of less resources than standard farming, all while still harnessing the sun in a way that is often altogether removed from vertical farming.

In a groundbreaking development poised to reshape the agricultural landscape, IronOx, a California-based startup, is pioneering the use of electrified robots equipped with smart cameras and sensors to revolutionize food production. Visitors to IronOx’s facilities have been left in awe by the seamless integration of advanced technology and traditional farming practices, leading to a paradigm shift in how crops are cultivated.

Initially captivated by IronOx’s electrified robots, visitors soon found themselves astounded by the remarkable capabilities of the company’s smart cameras and sensors. These innovations enable the robots to grow food with unprecedented precision and efficiency, surpassing the abilities of human farmers. IronOx’s AI-driven approach leverages a wealth of agricultural expertise, ensuring that the robots are equipped with the knowledge of the best human farming techniques.

According to IronOx’s CEO, Silver, the key to their system’s success lies in decoupling action from mobility. By employing robots to move plants instead of relying on human farmers traversing vast fields, IronOx eliminates the inherent limitations of human perception. While human eyes may possess a unique level of intuition, they often lack the precision and repeatability inherent in robotic hands and eyes.

This transformative approach to farming has sparked controversy among traditionalists, with legions of human farmers expressing skepticism and taking umbrage at the notion of being outperformed by robots. However, IronOx remains steadfast in its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.

As IronOx continues to refine its AI-powered farming solutions, the future of agriculture appears brighter than ever before. With electrified robots and smart technology at the forefront, IronOx is poised to lead the charge towards a more efficient, resilient, and environmentally-friendly food system.

Stay tuned for further developments as IronOx blazes a trail towards a new era of farming excellence.

The implications of IronOx’s innovation extend far beyond mere efficiency gains. With the global population on the rise and arable land becoming increasingly scarce, solutions like those pioneered by IronOx offer a glimmer of hope for sustainable food production in the face of mounting challenges.

Increasing demand for contactless service during the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the application of restaurant robots. Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, a growing number of restaurants had begun to embrace robot to save costs. The pandemic has sped up the existing trend of restaurant automation. The robots have become an ideal choice of restaurateurs because on one hand, they can reduce labor costs and food safety risks, and on the other, the technology has developed to the stage that it can be used in the catering industry.

Robots have been making their way into kitchens nationwide as the technology becomes cheaper and finding workers becomes harder. The most common robot use are collaborative robots also known as cobot. Cobot can assist the hospitality industry stay afloat in these unprecedented times and help practice social distancing in the kitchen, maintaining safety and good hygiene.

From top-notch hotels to pocket-friendly food shacks, this pandemic has made its dent on countless businesses in the hospitality industry as people are rethinking what they once took for granted, and they are now filled with constant doubt regarding hygiene and safety guidelines followed by staff behind the ‘No Admission’ zone in restaurants. This instilled fear for hygiene has not only affected the sales of dine-in, but catering and food delivery services as well.

However, every disaster also begets innovations, and this pandemic is no different, having raised the necessity to look towards a more automated future, aimed at not only increasing efficiency, but also at eradicating issues regarding hygiene and safety guidelines. Indeed, many robotics companies, like Miso Robotics, Bear Robotics, Peanut Robotics, Knightscope, SoftBank Robotics and Makr Shakr, say they have seen huge spikes in inquiries for their robots since the pandemic hit.

Miso is getting 150 inquiries a week for its Flippy robot, said Mike Bell, CEO of Miso. Flippy uses artificial intelligence, sensors, computer vision and robotic arms to fry fast food, like French fries and chicken wings. Miso take innovating seriously. Compared to the original model, Flippy 2 (new model) requires even less labor to operate and is engineered to fry nearly anything. A compact, modular design makes it adaptable to even the tightest kitchen spaces. It comes with automatic dispenser from freezer or refrigerated storage for high-volume fried foods. The robot also can identifies the food, senses the oil temperature, and monitors the cook time.

Way back in 2020 before Covid-19 hits us, TM Robot has already started to utilized their robot in food industry.
About a decade ago, Ted Adelson’s research group at MTI’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) invented a new sensor technology, named GelSight, that used physical contact with an object to provide a significantly detailed 3D map of its surface.

GelSight‘s technology enables digital tactile sensing with the sensitivity and resolution as human touch (hand). The sensor consists of a block of transparent rubber act as skin, called “gel” which on one face of the rubber is coated with metallic paint. When the paint-coated surface is press against an object, it reconcile to the object’s shape.

The metallic paint makes the object’s surface reflective, so its geometry becomes much easier for computer vision algorithms to infer. On the opposite side of the paint-coated rubber, there are three different colored lights and a single camera mounted on the sensor. The camera will capture the image from the pressed “gel” and with the helps of reflected light that being projected from different angles helps the computer to figure out the 3D shape of what that thing is.

For an autonomous robot, gauging object’s softness and hardness is essential to deciding not only where and how hard to grasp them but how they will behave when moved, stacked or laid on different surfaces. Tactile sensing could also aid the robots in differentiating objects that look similar. Previously, in order to determined the hardness of an object, robots have to lay an object on flat surface and gently poking them to see how much pressure they gives.

This is totally different from the way human gauge hardness. Our judgment is based on degree to which the contact area between the object and our fingers change on it. Softer objects tend to flatten more when pressed hence increasing the contact area. The researches adopted the same approach and came out with this idea.

GelSight‘s 3D tactile sensing is a solutions that address a wide variety of surface inspection challenges. The video explains how the use of tactile sensing gives robots added perception and intelligent interaction. This systems could helps in various high-value applications, including;
1. Robotic inspection for quality assurance.
2. Material properties identification.
3. Manufacturing and assembly process efficiency.
4. Industrial inspection to check for scratch, bump or any defect on material surface

In future, GelSight plan to improves the system with temperature and vibration detections to simulate as almost the same as human fingers. With this upgrades, the robot can identify directly more details what type of material it is holding/touching; such as determined whether the thing is metal or wood, is it wet or dry, even can differentiate between unvarnished wood and perfectly smooth surface.

It is not impossible that one day, robot can have fingers exactly the same as us, human, which can sense and moves exactly the same. Besides, GelSight goal is to provide the sensing capability, so that the robot can skillfully interact with the world.

The covid-19 pandemic period really brings a lot of problems to everyone. The current outbreaks has had severe economic consequences across the globe, and it does not look like any country will be unaffected. This not only has consequences for the economy; all of society is affected, which has led a dramatic changes in how businesses act and consumer behave.

During the pandemic, a lot of manufacture are facing labor shortage issue. The increasing of minimum wages and others costs also affecting the employer to hire people to run the production. Hence, many manufactures start deploying both collaborative and industrial robot to replace human.

Robot could help in perform a wide variety of functions; from welding, painting, assembly & disassembly, handling, loading & unloading, palletizing, tightening screw, sanding, deburring and many more. The old traditional industrial robot can only work on its own without human in its working area. The cost to implement the systems also is high since many considerations need to be taken; such fencing, safety area etc in order to avoid any incident.

But now, technology had evolved. Collaborative robot, familiar being called as Cobot are ideal for marrying the work of human and technology. They focus on collaboration and teamwork, with features to make workers’ job easier and faster. Cobot are not meant to replace human even though it can works individually, but cobot could comes in handy.

Cobot helps to accomplish jobs include those that are repetitive, hazardous, tedious to human or when lack of workers. Safety, versatility and assistance are the key features in the design of a cobot. This robot is smart and learns on the job, understanding the movement of items and speeds as it adjusts to the world around it. Cobot is easy to handle, it can be integrated with a lot of things and can involved in many applications. It comes with lighter-weight load capacities, offers exceptional agility and speed which perfect for task that require 100% accuracy with faster results.

Below are just some of the benefits that a COBOT can offer;
1. Partnership and Collaborating with Humans.
2. Ease of Use and Training.
3. Easy to Program.
4. Versatility and Functionality.
5. Increased Safety.
6. Fast and Easy Setup.
7. Increased Productivity.
8. Cost-Effective

Now, many System Integrator started to utilize the versatility of cobot. There are many application had been done including combining the cobot with Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) or/and Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR ). This systems extended the usage of cobot. The robot can moves around by AGV/AMR doing various task with minimum supervision.

Cobot are powerhouse for added productivity in workplace. From eliminating repetitive taks to offering faster, more accurate results with its 6-axis arms, they can improve operational performance in a myriad of ways. Plus, cobot can make the job safer for employees as it can work along with human side by side and taking over dangerous tasks from workers.
